“[These programs are] a really great opportunity to enhance the home-school connection for children, to support literacy in the home, and to support social-emotional development.”

Tanya Harris

Educator, Alameda County

“Community Child Care Council (4Cs) of Alameda County has been a proud supporter of Tandem (formerly Raising A Reader, San Francisco, Alameda & Contra Costa Counties) for many years and, more recently, a partner with them in building literacy skills in young children.

As an agency that serves families with young children and their caregivers, 4Cs of Alameda County is acutely aware of the importance of building literacy skills from the time a child is born. During our spring staff development day, Tandem staff trained our staff on tools and techniques we can use when reading with young children or to share with caregivers and parents as they read with children in their care. Tandem staff were fun, engaging, and, between educating staff about the research and science of the importance of the tools they taught us, showed us the techniques they used using the interactive book sharing model. Tandem’s presentation was the highlight of the day for many of our staff.

A few months after our staff development day training, Tandem Literacy Specialist, Dulce, returned to 4Cs as a special guest at our free annual Children’s Faire. A day full of free arts and crafts, entertainment, and information from our community partners, Dulce hosted a reading tent and shared some of her favorite stories during Read Alouds with our Faire guests. The reading tent was a hit, as Dulce and 4Cs staff (now trained in techniques when sharing books with families), spent some time in the reading tent sharing and enjoying the books families picked out from the book giveaway table. Dulce’s Read Alouds to the audience of more than 1,200 guests was both educational and fun! Children and their parents were enthralled and engaged in Dulce’s rousing rendition of Pete the Cat and other stories from her green bag.

Thank you to Tandem for your dedication to building early literacy through family engagement! The staff and families of 4Cs of Alameda County are lucky to have you as partners in educating and building literacy skills for our youngest children in Alameda County.”

“The reading levels of my students have improved immensely. I believe Tandem’s professional development training has helped and supported my classroom teaching.”

“Five years ago, I learned about Tandem (then known as Raising A Reader, San Francisco, Alameda & Contra Costa Counties) – I had wanted to pay a friend of mine for some organizing work she provided me, and she said no, she’d rather I look into Tandem, one of her favorite nonprofits. Having raised my kids in San Francisco and worked and volunteered at a number of spots through the years, I can state unequivocally that Tandem is a great organization to be involved with.”

“Tandem is a group you feel immediately connected with – the staff, the board, and other volunteers are very approachable, dedicated, and they know their stuff. The LOVELY simplicity of their mission (not to detract from its importance) is evident, fun, and rewarding right off the bat. No bureaucracy, no waiting around, just get in there and help out!”

“No matter how many hours or skills you have available to volunteer with, there are opportunities to help out. I have volunteered as a docent at a house tour where Tandem received proceeds, at a Spanish outdoor fair in Oakland, at a book sorting project in a warehouse, at the California Academy of Sciences with an art project, and participated in a great Mother’s Day book-giving project, as well as parent/teacher/tutor education nights and various fundraisers.”

“It’s a win-win situation for all.”

“It supports the connection between the young children and adults because adults read to them. It’s about bonding and relationship.”

Ivy Ng

Educator, San Francisco

“Tandem came to our indie bookstore to provide workshops for parents seeking a more engaging experience in the process of reading books with children. It was fun, energetic, and very professional education not only for the parents who attended, but for myself as well. As a children’s bookseller who has done many storytime events at our store, I now have a greater understanding and enthusiasm for reading WITH children, and not just at them.”

Ashley Despain

Community Partner

“Tandem is one of the most popular volunteering events that we do all year (out of many!). The cause of equality in early childhood development speaks to so many of our employees. Tandem’s volunteer activities have brought this cause to life for participants: adapting books for children with special needs gives us a visceral understanding of the importance of tailored learning experiences; and creating storytelling blocks reminds us that development comes in many forms. People leave volunteer events feeling like they have meaningfully contributed to Tandem’s impact. Indeed, one of our employees volunteered with his 8 year old son, who told his father afterward ‘Dad, that’s really cool that you guys help people so much.”

“I was raised in a family of readers. The love of books was something imparted to me very early and has been ongoing my entire life. Last year, a month before I turned 39, I gave birth to my son, and I count the opportunity to raise him to be among the greatest of my life’s great joys. We are very lucky that there are books everywhere in our home – and wonderful libraries nearby – and he will grow up surrounded by books and people who want to read to him. Not every child has this same chance.

I’ve been reflecting a lot on this tremendous milestone, and as I considered what I wished for on my birthday, it occurred to me that I feel so tremendously fortunate that the only thing I truly want is to find a way for this birthday to have an impact.

I asked my friends and family to help me celebrate my 40th birthday by donating to my campaign supporting Tandem.

You get to a certain age where you don’t need anything else. I don’t need people to feel obligated to bring me another scented candle to my birthday party. I think a lot of people feel this way as they reach certain milestones. Instead, I want to give back. I want to be able to inspire even just one other person to do something like this for their birthday. It’s a gift that really means something to me.”

Carly generously set up a peer-to-peer fundraising campaign, Supporting 40 Young Readers in 40 Days, that raised over $4,000 to support children and families in the Bay Area. Her campaign received donations from 50 donors, and even exceeded her original donation goal.

“I am exceptionally proud to be serving on the board of directors at Tandem. The team is doing a tremendous job at their stated goal of sparking joy and closing the opportunity gap. I am always impressed at the passion and enthusiasm of the staff and other board members, which coupled with rigorous annual and quarterly planning and relentless execution, continues to deliver and expand their programming well beyond their objectives.”
